Place shanks in a large pot and cover with water. Simmer over medium heat until tender, about 30 minutes. Drain and return meat to pot. Let cool.
Meanwhile, prepare marinade. Mix together the remaining ingredients, pour over the meat and toss to coat well. Cover and let marinate for 2 or 3 hours, turning and spooning marinade over meat frequently.
Remove shanks from mixture and place on upper grill over medium heat. Heat the marinade on the barbecue. Baste ocasionally with the reserved marinade and turn, until browned and tender.
Serve the remaining marinade on the side (heated) to pour over the meat when served.
