Melt the butter or heat the oil in a large heavy skillet over medium heat. Cook the onion, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Do not brown. Stir in the broccoli, mushrooms, and garlic. Cook, still over medium heat, stirring from time to time, until tender, about 6 minutes.
Stir in the lemon juice and season well with salt, pepper, and thyme. Cook, tossing, 1 minute and serve very hot.
