Bake for 5 minutes or until the onions are golden brown.
Go Nuts! Toast 1/2 cup sliced almonds. Add with the remaining onions.
Bring On The Bacon: Add 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled, to the bean mixture.
For A Festive Touch: Add 1/2 cup chopped red pepper to the bean mixture.

12/11/08 08:46 AM | With a ground beef/tomato twist ...Funny I ran across this recipe today, as i had just recommended green bean casserole to a friend a few days ago and told her i'd ask my mom for the recipe. Mom used to make it occasionally (not on holidays), back in the 60's when we (4 of us) were kids, but she used sauteed ground beef and tomato sauce INSTEAD of the cream of mushroom soup, NO soy sauce or milk, green beans, pepper, french fried onions, and served it over noodles - -delicious! My brother, now 50, used to beg Mom to make it weekly (lol) and he still loves this dish. We didn't like the mushroom soup/milk version. |

11/30/08 09:19 PM | Contemplating Changes...I would like to try making this with Campbell's Cream of Asparagus Soup or Cream of Broccoli Soup, either by themselves, or mixed with the Cream of Mushroom Soup. My cousin and I made it this past Thanksgiving (2008) with fresh, whole, steamed green beans. She used a combination of two other recipes that did not mention the soy sauce. It wasn't as good as this recipe (and the Safeway store we shopped in was out of frozen green beans the night before Thanksgiving), but when I've had it made this way, it's always delicious to me. |

11/26/08 06:28 PM | Upgrade!!!Try using Golden Mushroom instead of Cream of Mushroom and don't add so much water. Also, you can saute some extra mushrooms and add a bit of Herbs de Provence. |

11/21/08 02:29 PM | stserranoThis has not only been a favorite at Christmas time. But any other time of the year when we get hungery for this casserole. It's the BOMB. It should be ten stars. Pooh to the ones who only give it a low rating. |
