Chocolate Upside-Down Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 c. sifted flour
  • 2 t, baking powder
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 6 T. cocoa
  • 1 3/4 c. hot water
  • 2 T. shortening
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • 1/3 c. chopped nuts
  • 3/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar

Cooking Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix and sift flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and 2 T. cocoa.

Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in milk and vanilla; add nuts.

Pour into greased 9" layer cake pan. Mix brown sugar and remaining cocoa; sprinkle over batter.

Pour water carefully over surface of uncooked batter. (This makes a sauce when the cake is baked). Bake at 350 degrees 40 minutes. Let cool 1 hr.

Recipe Notes

Cake and topping in one. When the cake is cut and served the cake is turned over with the sauce on top!
