STREUSEL CRUST PREPARATION
In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the rolled oats, brown sugar and cloves. Rub the butter pieces into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly and still somewhat lumpy. Set the streusel aside while you prepare the filling.
FILLING PREPARATION
Pulverize the orange half (peel and all) in a food processor or blender.
Put the sugar and water in a medium nonaluminum saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat and let it continue to boil for 3 minutes. Add the cranberries and chopped orange and boil until all the berries pop. Let the berries cool for 15 minutes and stir in the brandy, if using. Peel and core the pears, cut them into 1-inch chunks and put them into a large mixing bowl. Stir the cranberries into the pears.
ASSEMBLY AND BAKING
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Press two-thirds (about 2-1/4 cups) of the streusel mixture onto the bottom and sides of a 10-inch pie pan. Spoon the fruit into the pie pan. Sprinkle the remaining streusel over top of the fruit. Set the pie pan on a baking sheet.
Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, until browned and very bubbly.
