1. Place the apples, oranges, dried fruit, and juice in a saucepan, along with the cranberries, if you're using them, and the cinnamon, port, or cognac, if you're using them.
2. Cook and stir for about 15 - 20 minutes, until all is almost mush.
3. Add some sweetener to taste. I like mine a bit tart, so start with just a tbsp or two.
4. Stir in the walnuts.
5. Cook a few minutes more to warm the walnuts.
6. Serve yourself a bowlful, and the winter cold won't know where to find you.
