  • 3 apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1-inch dice
  • 2 navel (seedless) oranges, peeled and cut into 1-inch dice
  • 1/2 cup dried fruit, such as prunes, dried apricots, cherries, cranberries, strawberries or blueberries
  • 1/2 cup juice (apple, orange or grapefruit or water in a pinch)
  • 1 cup cranberries (optional)

  • 2 tbsp port or cognac (optional)

Cooking Instructions

1. Place the apples, oranges, dried fruit, and juice in a saucepan, along with the cranberries, if you're using them, and the cinnamon, port, or cognac, if you're using them.

2. Cook and stir for about 15 - 20 minutes, until all is almost mush.

3. Add some sweetener to taste. I like mine a bit tart, so start with just a tbsp or two.

4. Stir in the walnuts.

5. Cook a few minutes more to warm the walnuts.

6. Serve yourself a bowlful, and the winter cold won't know where to find you.
