Mix together all your dry ingredients, onion included, and any other optional ingredient. Make a well in the center, drop in your egg, stir in your milk, and blend well to make a nice smoothe batter. Let it sit for 2 minutes and then form it into teaspoon sized balls.
Heat the oil to 350 degrees. Drop your batter into the oil and fry until your hush puppies are golden brown. Drain them on paper towels and serve at once.
