Divide hamburger into 8 equal amounts and make thin patties about 4 inches in diameter.
On each of four of the patties place 1 slice of cheese (cut into quarters and laid so not too near edge) and 1/4 of the onion).
Put second pattie on top of each and pinch edges all around to seal well. Season with salt pepper and light sprinkling of garlic powder.
Grill or pan fry for about 3-4 minutes turn over and cook another 3-4 minutes until cooked fully.
Serve as is or on bun with lettuce tomato slice pickle and mayo.
I made these up for my kids when they were young - I was short on cheese to top their burgers so I cut it up and put it inside so they wouldnt fight over who got more. They really liked them and named them 'Meltdowns'.
