Cream shortening & sugar, add eggs. Combine cocoa & food coloring to make a paste. Stir into creamed mixture. Sift flour & salt, add flour mixture alternately together with buttermilk to mixture. Blend well. Add vanilla, combine vinegar & soda & while still forming, add to batter. Do not beat. Bake at 350 Deg. F for 30-35 minutes.
Icing: Cool flour & milk, stirring constantly till thick. Add butter, sugar & vanilla & beat until it resembles whipped cream. Spread on cooled cake and serve.

01/29/09 11:32 PM | YummyThe cake is good, but the icing is "to die for". I refrigerate mine since it has so much butter in it. |

12/16/08 07:11 PM | Holiday FavoriteI inherited this recipe from my mother and aunt. It has been a tradition in our family for over 50 years. The butter icing is to die for. You must put the ingredients in as the recipe calls or it will fall falt, but the result is well worth it and it is even better the second day. Well worth the effort. |
