Ingredients

  • 4 Granny Smith apples (about 2 pounds), peeled, cored and cut in 3/-inch chunks
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3 tablespoons red hot-cinnamon candies

Cooking Instructions

Bring apples, water, sugar, lemon juice and ginger to boil in a medium saucepan. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 5 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender.

Uncover, increase heat to medium-high and stir in candies. Cook, stirring often, until applesauce is thick and pink, about 5 minutes.

If you want to skip the cinnamon candies, you can get a lovely pink sauce by cooking a cut-up purple plum with the apples.
