Ingredients

  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 8 ounces lean ground beef
  • 3 links (about 8 ounces) hot Italian sausage, removed from casings
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
  • Garnish: Parmesan cheese curls shaved from a chunk of cheese with a vegetable peeler

Cooking Instructions

Cook spaghetti in a large pot of boiling water as directed on package.

Meanwhile heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and translucent, about 3 minutes.

Increase heat and add beef and sausage. Cook, breaking up chunks with a wooden spoon, 5 minutes, or until meat is no longer pink. Drain off any fat. Add tomatoes and wine. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes or until sauce thickens slightly.

Drain pasta and transfer to a large serving bowl. Add sauce and toss to mix and coat. Scatter cheese on top.

The sauce freezes well, so make a double batch.
