1) To toast bread: Preheat the oven to 375F. Slice bread into 1-inch slices and lay in a single layer on a wire cooling rack set on a shallow baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the bread remain there until very crisp, about 15 minutes.
2) To prepare crumbs: When slices are cool enough to handle, crush them and drop into the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Process bread until of fine crumb consistency. (Alternatively, crush them with a rolling pin.) Remove to a bowl and let cool. Use as directed.
3) To store: Place crumbs into a doubled heavy-duty plastic bag and store in the freezer until needed.
