Place the bread under the broiler, on the gas flame, or in a very good toaster oven with a bagel setting until it has flecks of gold and brown on both sides. Rub the unpeeled garlic clove on the toast. Top the bread with the chopped tomato and place on a serving plate. Sprinkle with the olive oil and season to taste with basil, if desired, salt, and pepper.
