Combine in mixer bowl with whip attachment. Mix at high speed until very light.
Add one at a time, mixing well at medium speed.
Combine. Add to batter ingredients. Mix at low speed just until well mixed.
Add to batter. Mix well at low speed. Portion into six oiled and floured or paper-lined 8-inch cake pans. Place on sheet pans. Bake in lower third of preheated 350F oven until top is golden and cakes test done, about 30 to 35 minutes. Transfer to wire racks. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans. When cool, cut each cake into two layers.
Spread over bottom layers. Top with second layers. Chill several hours before cutting for service.
