tear lettuce in bite sized pieces, put in glass or metal salad bowl
add onions
fry bacon to crisp and remove to paper towel; pour of all but 2 tablespoons bacon grease
return pan to heat, add vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. Simmer on low til warm and sugar is melted
if using bacon bits, put bacon bits in fry pan with 2 tablespoons of cooking oil, add vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper
crumble bacon over lettuce and onions. When ready to serve, pour heated grease,vinegar, sugar mixture over lettuce, mix thoroughly. ENJOY!!
This salad is delicious. I know, I was hestitant at first to try it...but its fantastic!! Its my husbands favorite side dish.

I remember an old family friend that grew up in the PA Dutch country and she made this all summer long with fresh spinach from her garden.. brings back fond memories.. a very savory sald. |
